The Thornycroft company was once a notable manufacturer of commercial and military vehicles. Less well-known is Thornycroft's brief foray into car manufacturing, when, from 1903 to 1912, the firm produced high-quality cars at its Basingstoke factory. In the early part of this period, British cars sometimes used major items and components of foreign origin, but Thornycroft shunned this approach and designed and built its cars almost entirely, including carburettors, at its Basingstoke factory.
