Thornycroft Road Run Text
Hampshire Road Run Returns to Milestones Museum
We are excited to be hosting this year’s Hampshire Road Run at Milestones Museum on Sunday 16 August, when a stunning collection of vintage and classic vehicles will gather on the field outside the museum.
Organised by The Thornycroft Society and Basingstoke Classic Car Club, the event offers visitors the opportunity to stroll among an impressive display of classic and vintage vehicles, view them up close and speak to their owners to learn more about their fascinating stories.
The commercial vehicles will be on display from 8am before setting off on a scenic Road Run through the Hampshire countryside at approximately 10am. The vehicles will then return to Milestones at around 2pm, giving visitors another opportunity to see them in action.
Live Music and Refreshments
Visitors with an admissions ticket to the museum can also enjoy live music from singer Sofia Belfelice, who will be performing on the museum bandstand throughout the morning.
For food and refreshments throughout the day, Rooftops Café will be open and serving a range of drinks, snacks and meals. Free to enter.
Discover Basingstoke’s Thornycroft Heritage in Milestones Museum
Why not extend your visit and head inside Milestones Museum to discover even more historic transport? Home to more than 40 beautifully restored vehicles, the museum’s collection includes a steam locomotive, traction engines, vintage cars, lorries, bicycles and the only surviving Portsmouth tram.
Many of the vehicles on display in Milestones Museum were built by Thornycroft, the renowned local manufacturer that opened its Basingstoke factory in 1898.
Originally based in Chiswick, the Thornycroft Steam Wagon Company Ltd expanded to Basingstoke to meet growing demand for its steam lorries and vans. The factory also produced motor cars between 1903 and 1912, playing an important role in the town’s industrial history. Visitors can learn more about this remarkable local story inside Milestones, where a recreation of part of the Thornycroft factory forms part of the museum experience.
